July 2025

  • First Launch…

It is July 2nd, which means it has been a year since the initial launch of the Cassette Beasts fanlisting, the very first fanlisting I ever created! I am happy to have helped to promote and spread the love for Cassette Beasts on the indie web!

June 2025

  • First Anniversary…

14 June 2025 marked the first anniversary of me joining the 32-Bit Cafe community on both its Discord server and Discourse forum! I like that Discourse has a It is a nice touch that there is a cake icon after the username and title for anniversaries of a member joining the Discourse forum. 32-Bit Cafe has been one of my favourite online communities for not only its dedication to promote the indie web, but also being inclusive, anti-bigotry and well-managed. Therefore, I actively participated in the community, which earned me the "New Member of the Month" award. I am happy that 32-Bit Cafe exists, and I am proud to be part of 32-Bit Cafe community!

  • Unexpected Water…

My home's electricity supply just got disrupted unexpectedly. Thankfully it was brief, but we have been experiencing more than one random water or electricity supply cuts recently. After having experienced a water supply cut for two days not long ago, even brief disruptions were really annoying.

  • Resetting My PC and…

I spent the past 2 days in resetting my PC, and my main VPS too because I made the terrible mistake of not double-checking if my SSH keys for my main VPS were backed up. I had disabled root and password logins to improve security. Fortunately, I took notes on how I set up software and apps on my machines, so I could quickly install everything on my VPS again.

Data privacy is important for everyone. But for some marginalized populations, data privacy is indispensable for social connection, access to information, and physical safety.

  • Tried to Self-Host…

Tried to self-host Standard Notes, since I already use it often to jot down notes quickly. However, it turns out there is not much advantage for hosting Standard Notes yourself other than a cheaper subscription plan for advanced UI features. My Obsidian setup has fulfilled my needs for a more sophisticated note-taking system, so I don't need Standard Notes' subscription plan features. I decided to just stick to Standard Notes' default server, and removed the Standard Notes Docker container and images from my server. Not to mention, I encountered the issue of the desktop version of Standard Notes app keep asking me for account credentials even after creating an account for the self-hosted version. It is a known issue that I had to specify the Docker image tag to pull to work around it.

  • Cleaning Up Systemd…

Since I started to host stuff, including my websites, on the first VPS I rented, I have been learning to preserve my server's disk space as much as possible, including cleaning up unneeded files. Today, I learned about systemd journal logs, and realised that they were the primary reason my VPS disk storage was taken up every day, so I configured /etc/systemd/journald.conf to prevent systemd journal logs from taking up more than a certain disk storage space (SystemMaxUse) and being kept for more than a certain time period (MaxRetentionSec). This helped freeing up disk space of my server.

  • Continue to Publish…

Leilukin's Hub had been migrated from its original host on Neocities for almost a year, but I still log in to Neocities and share updates about my website. After the migration, I posted about Leilukin's Hub's updates manually. However, inspired by Owl of Beep Bird, I am experimenting publishing the latest changelogs of Leilukin's Hub to Neocities to inform followers of updates, by making use of the Neocities command line interface (CLI). Specifically, I wrote a shell script so after I generate the website output of Leilukin's Hub with Eleventy, I run the shell script to copy the Leilukin's Hub changelog page of the current year to a different folder for Neocities, then to use Neocities CLI to push the changelog page to my Neocities files.

  • Problems with…

After converting my Eleventy website's template engine from Nunjucks to Vento, for some unknown reason, when I tried to deploy my website from its Gitea repository on 32-Bit Cafe's instance via Gitea action, it failed to generate the contents of my yearly changelog archive pages, while it is not an issue when I build my website locally or deploy my website via GitHub action, so I had to switch back to using GitHub actions in my website’s mirror repository on GitHub to deploy my site automatically. Now I finally worked around the issue by switching to using Node.js instead of Bun as the JavaScript runtime to generate my website in the Gitea action workflow, so I moved back to deploying my website from the Gitea repo instead of its mirror repo on GitHub. I discovered this workaround when I was learning to host my own Gitea instance (and I’m planning to move my website’s repositories to my own Gitea instance). It seems like Gitea action's runner has issue with running Bun's GitHub action…

April 2025

  • R.I.P. Nicky Katt…

I just found out now that Nicky Katt, who voiced Atton Rand in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, had died. The news was from mid-April. April is a busy month for me due to attending a computer science bootcamp, and I only just found out near the end of April.

  • Leilukin's Hub's…

I have converted the Git repository of Leilukin's Hub main site on 32-Bit Cafe's Gitea instance from a mirror repository to a regular repository. Originally, Leilukin Hub's Git repository was hosted on GitHub, with its repo on 32-Bit Cafe's Gitea instance being a mirror. GitHub Actions were the primary reason for using GitHub to host Leilukin's Hub's Git repository, as GitHub Actions allow me to deploy my static websites to a remote server Hostinger. Recently in March, 32-Bit Cafe's Gitea instance added support for Gitea Actions, which are compatible with GitHub Actions. This encouraged me to consider using Gitea actions to deploy Leilukin's Hub. Therefore, yesterday I converted Leilukin's Hub's Gitea repository from a mirror repo to a regular repo, and today I finally managed to set up the deployment workflow with Gitea Actions!

  • Create Favicons…

As part of my effort of removing most favicon markup from my websites, I use ImageMagick, which can create ICO format favicons from one source of image file, by converting the source image to multiple resolutions in PNG (for higher resolutions) and BMP (for resolutions 192x192 and below) formats. That said, I noticed that mobile version of browsers may be unable to fetch a favicon that includes more than one image format, so in my ImageMagick command line, I specified the output resolution to 192x192 as the highest, so the favicon will contain only BMP format images.

  • Get (Most of…

I removed the markup and unnecessary assets for my websites' default favicon from the HTML <head> tag, after learning more about favicons from Get out of my <head>'s guide, "Zero byte favicon markup". The only pages where I still add a favicon markup are my shrine pages on the main site and my individual fanlistings, where I use icons relevant to the page's topic as the favicon.

  • Finally Saw a…

I have always been fascinated with Pomeranian dogs for how adorable, small and fluffy they are. Fictional Pomeranians including Missile from Ghost Trick as well as Barkley and Pombomb from Cassette Beasts have certainly helped to endear me to them as well. Today, when I was stepping out of my school's campus to return home, there was a person walking a Pomeranian dog nearby. Finally, this was the first time I saw a Pomeranian in-person, so I immediately took the opportunity to have a good look at the cutie. Pomeranians are so cute! 🥰

  • Why are Pokémon…

I already knew why the Pokémon video games struggle to evolve badly even before watching this video, but as long as die-hard Pokémon fans keep defending them against criticisms (and refusing to try out any other monster taming games even if they have higher quality), the points still need to be repeated again and again.

  • Cassette Beasts…

Looks like I will need to stay up late to watch Cassette Beasts Showcase 2025 live after all. Initially the presentation was planned for 10 pm today in my time zone, but the developers are now delaying it to 2 hours later, because coincidentally Nintendo Direct 2025 will start at the initial planned time for Cassette Beasts Showcase 2025, which is 10 pm in my time zone. I still remember a comment I received for one of my posts on Tumblr via reblogging the post and adding the commentary in the tags of the reblog, talking about how Pokémon is lucky that its fans refuse to try out any other monster taming games, because otherwise more people would realise how painfully mediocre the Pokémon games in general are for the mosnter taming genre.

  • Watched Ne Zha 2 in…

Went to watch Ne Zha 2 with my parents in cinema in the afternoon. My parents were more excited about watching the film than I did, while I was merely along the ride to see what the hype was about, since it is now the highest-grossing animated film in the world. After seeing it, I found that while I was impressed by the animation and visuals, I was unimpressed by how the portrayal and treatment of female characters were full of archetypes in male-centric films. A Ne Zha 2 review by circularuins on Douban (in Chinese) explains my issues with the portrayal and treatment of women in the film well.

Trying out Purelymail to replace Outlook for my email purposes. I appreciate that Purelymail allows you to use custom domains and create multiple mailboxes without additional charge. I have set up multiple addresses and mailboxes on my Purelymail account for different purposes, so I'm changing the email addresses of many of my online accounts, and deleting accounts that I don't use or need any more. Update, 13 March 2025: Finally deleted the 50+ online accounts I no longer use or need, and changed the email addresses for my existing accounts that previously used Outlook with ones that use my domain names. Grateful of password managers for not only allowing me to save passwords and generate unique passwords without having to memorise every one of them myself, but also helping me in keeping track of how many online accounts I have, including ones that I no longer use or need so I can get rid of those accounts.

  • TSL Expanded Ending

Found a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II mod that makes a great addition to my KotOR 2 mod build — TSL Expanded Ending! I tried it out myself and I enjoyed the mod a lot. I appreciate that it gives the player more choices, such as the option if they want to destroy Malachor or not regardless of the player's alignment, if they want to find Revan or not, choosing to stay on Malachor if the player doesn't destroy it, etc. The mod also restores Handmaiden/Visas' ending conversation about wanting to follow the player even if the player chooses to destroy Malachor. I greatly appreciate it because Malachor is destroyed in most of my playthroughs, and thus I was never able to get such conversation in most of my playthroughs.
